It's not entirely surprising, given how dedicated Tony is when he puts his mind to a task, but that doesn't mean Steve can't appreciate it.
Once he swallows his bite though, he has a follow-up question. ]

[ He nods in agreement to what he says, because he’s absolutely right. Especially since Rhodey knows damn well how poorly Tony sometimes takes care of himself, especially after an injury. Plus everyone seems to keep expecting him to react poorly to the bleak prognosis of his arm, and sometimes it feels like they’re treating him like a ticking time bomb.
Not that he can blame them. Once upon a time, yes, Tony would have probably reacted very poorly to those news and all the weeks he has been in recovery. It has been a long, hard road, one that some days still has its bumps, but Tony’s trying to take it day by day. It’s all he can do, after all, and he’s just glad he has any extra days to actually spend.
When Steve says he thinks he’ll like camping, Tony smirks. ]
If it wasn’t for the fact that I’ve been living in the middle of nowhere for five years, I’d say you’re wrong. But it’s been good, actually, to spend time away from the city. So...you know. Why not. Yes. No screens. If we get lost, we'll look at a map. Use a compass. As for emergencies, why, do you have grizzlies near the cabin or something?
[ Steve is unfazed, mostly because he's enjoying shocking Tony in this way. He's never lived his life without technology — at least not on purpose. Which means, Tony doesn't know how good it feels to unplug entirely. And now that the world is safe, they can actually do that.
Plus, if he's really worried, they can bring a GPS or something. ]
Europe huh? Do you know where? If it's Paris, I- [ Steve pauses. He can't actually give real recommendations. They're about half a century out of date. ] My only recommendation is that he shouldn't spend all his time in the cities if he can help it. The countryside is beautiful.
[ Steve smiles when Tony thanks him for asking. He's really happy for him, to have found someone like Peter. ]
Wanda's still having a hard time, but she's doing her best. Bucky's decided to spend some time in Wakanda. With Shuri. [ He says Shuri's name with a little extra oomph. Like he's implying something. ] But Sam ... [ Steve smirks. ] I've asked him to take over being Captain America.
[ No screens. No technology. That all just sounds like crazy talk, but Tony ultimately just shakes his head slightly. ]

[ He nods. ] Yeah. I don’t remember all the cities, but I think London and maybe Rome? It sounds like a pretty comprehensive tour so Paris might be in the list. I’ll pass along the recommendation, I’m sure he’ll appreciate it.
[ He means it, too. Peter thinks very highly of Steve.

All I know ... is that she was the one who helped him shake Hydra's programming. They ended up spending a lot of time together back then.

He's been practicing with the shield. I get a couple of texts a day about how it doesn't obey the laws of physics. But, honestly? I think he's really enjoying it.
[ He means it, too. Shuri has been essential for him even being able to sit without doubling over in pain, let alone living, so if she's happy then he's glad for it. And, well, he supposes Barnes should also be happy. So he's happy for them.

[ Though, he leaves out the tiny detail that while the shield is with Sam, a certain hammer is still at his apartment. It's an honest mistake. As honored as he is to be its temporary keeper, Steve's never saw it as part of him, or who he is. ]

You know. I don’t know. We may have to start one. I guess I haven’t passed down the torch but I’m retired. That counts, yeah? I’d say let’s ask Fury, but I think we beat him to retirement. I don’t know if he’ll ever actually stop.
[ which, well. Tony probably won’t either. Not completely. He won’t be Iron Man anymore, but there are designs in his garage that imply he’s not out of the game completely. ]

[ Steve chuckles at the comment about Fury. The man's gone to death and back, and yet, Steve agrees. He'll never stop. ]

[ Steve's certainly thought about it. Sam's also been trying to convince him to stay — if not to fight, to train them, just like he did after Ultron. But after everything that's happened, staying doesn't feel right anymore. Visiting still does, but, if Peggy's taught him one thing, it's that his life can't revolve around this anymore. ]
Ehh, I don’t know about training the next generation. Arming them, making them better stuff... I can do that. I know Fury has people to do the same, but let’s face it, it won’t be good enough.
[ That’s usually the reasoning his mind comes up with whenever he thinks about this. He could step away, sure, but things won’t get done right. Not in certain things. So that’s why he’s still building. Or, well, planing on it. [ You can tell that Steve's tempted, but not enough. ] ... can't. It just wouldn't feel right. Not unless you were already flying somewhere and I was just tagging along.
[ Okay, Steve’s reaction shouldn’t be so endearing (and since when does he find him endearing?) but he can’t help the small smile that crosses his face. Especially when he looks like he’s about to agree, before taking it back. ]

But if what it’ll take is for me to travel for you to go - fine. You’ll have to give me a couple of months, but it’ll give me time to plan an itinerary at least.

Steve mostly looks surprised — and a little bit flustered — that Tony is offering to plan a vacation for them. But then Tony starts interpreting his hesitancy the wrong way and Steve interrupts. ]
-No no. I'd ... [ Steve's lips are parted, but he doesn't seem to know what to say for a moment. ] ... I'd really love it, actually. For us to travel together, not for work this time.
[ He grins. ] Plus, you're probably the best travel guide on the whole planet.
Good. [ He grins. ] I mean, I don’t know if I’m the best. But you’ll benefit from me skirting my CEO responsibilities back in the day, and the places I’ve gotten to explore.
Besides. You’ll be in charge of our camping trip, I can handle this one.
[ He takes a sip of his coffee before turning back to Steve. ]
So, if we could go anywhere right now, where would you want to go?
Yeah. [ Steve says, with a breathy laugh. ] Sounds like a very fair trade.

[ It's meant to be a joke, because of course two trips doesn't constitute an entire retirement. But there's also a warmth to the way Steve says it. Like he doesn't mind spending more and more time with Tony. Not at all. ]

For a long time he never figured they’d be able to share a meal together, let alone plan trips and retirement, but here they are. It’s definitely progress, considering how he could hardly eat at first. He’s just comfortable now, so it helps to feel at ease. ]

[ He organizes a weekend camping trip in Tony's backyard, and Tony organizes an international flight itinerary. Super fair. But then again, they are each organizing something in their own wheelhouse. ]
Tony ... [ Steve finishes the last bite of his burger then, eyebrows raised, letting his sentence just dangle there until he swallows. ] ... if I didn't know better, I'd think we just started planning our retirement together.
[ It's meant to be a joke, because of course two trips doesn't constitute an entire retirement. But there's also a warmth to the way Steve says it. Like he doesn't mind spending more and more time with Tony. Not at all. ]

[ Steve may notice his features seem to soften a bit as he says it, and his smile only seems to grow on his face.
Setting the fork down, he takes another sip of coffee before leaning back again against the booth. There’s still some food on his plate, but he has eaten a good amount of it. It’s definitely progress, considering how he could hardly eat at first. He’s just comfortable now, so it helps to feel at ease. ]
