[ Steve is right - Tony doesn’t have the first clue about camping. He’ll never admit it, but after making plans about the actual trip, Tony was more concerned on what to wear than what to eat. He had actually ordered a few lightweight hiking pants just for the occasion. He had shoes for hiking, as he has been doing some of that already in the last five years, but...well, he has to look good. While camping.
When Steve arrives, Tony’s ready to go with his sunglasses, new pants, and a thin long sleeve shirt that he already has the sleeve of his good arm rolled up. Slung over his shoulder is the backpack he’s using for a change of clothes, his meds, sunscreen and a flashlight, but it looks comically small compared to the one Steve is carrying.
And...god, it’s weird to be excited about camping, but he is. Deep down - very deep down - he knows that it’s more that he’s excited about hanging out with Steve than anything else, but he’s not ready to admit that, yet. So he focuses more on the trip. He does worry about the no technology piece, but he abides by their agreement and his phone has been left at home.
When Steve asks how his arm is doing, Tony shrugs slightly with his good shoulder and gives a quick ‘it’s fine’ before changing the subject. It’s still in the sling, secured against his body and hidden under the long sleeve of his shirt. The shirt is light enough that the lack of bulk from the bandages is visible, but thankfully it’s not light enough to show the actual damage. He knows that at some point Steve might get to see it, or see some of the after effects that Tony has so far done a good job hiding, but it is what it is. He has already resigned himself to that fact.
As they walk, Tony smirks over at him. ]
You know, if I start going through some sort withdrawals from not having FRIDAY or my phone on me, that’ll be on you. So I hope you’re ready for that.
[ Well. Tony does look pretty good. And he looks the part, which Steve makes sure to tell him. As for Tony's immediate disinterest in talking about his arm, Steve takes the hint. Tony seemed fine enough every day at the compound, so he'll leave it Tony's own judgment as to what he'll need on the trip.
Plus, they're only going to be gone for a day. While he can't make an absolute guarantee that everything will be fine, given that he'll be around to help, Steve sincerely doubts anything bad will happen. They're going camping in Tony's backyard, after all, even if it's a much bigger backyard than normal. ]
Oh, you bet.
[ Steve smirks. It's a gorgeous day. They can hear birds in the distance, and their walk is punctuated by the crisp sound of their boots crunching leaves beneath their feet. ]
If there's something you'd normally say to FRIDAY, go ahead. I'll fill in.
[ It Steve noticed Tony’s smile growing at the compliment how he looks the part, he wasn’t imagining things. What can he say, it’s part of his vain side, which hasn’t quite left him even after all these years.
The day really is beautiful, and Tony hasn’t even thought of his phone, he’s just being a smartass. Steve’s response makes him laugh, though, and smirks over at him. ]
Oh yeah? I’m going to tell her you’re trying to replace her.

[ Hearing Tony laugh is pretty rewarding — Steve feels like both of them have earned the chance to laugh more in their lives. ]
I don't think she'll find me very threatening. [ As they walk alongside each other, Steve scrunches up his nose a little as he thinks. ] I'm pretty sure the only part of her job I can do ... is talk to people.
Oh I don’t know... She thinks you convincing me to go camping is astounding. She was in shock for almost a minute when I let her know what my plans were this weekend.
[ He pauses for a moment. ]
...actually, she may try to pick your brain on how you did that to see if she can get any pointers.
I'm willing to tell her ... mmm ... most of my secrets when I get back.
[ The trail starts to curve up a little, following a dirt path in between a canopy of trees. As they continue on, the more and more they can see the lake on their left. ]
You really know how to pick a spot. [ To live in a place like this? It's pretty incredible.
After a small turn, however, the trail is blocked by a big tree that had fallen over long ago. By the looks of it, anyone else who has ever been here as mostly just climbed over it, but there might be a way around. ]
You up for trying this? [ Steve asks, as he takes off his backpack and sets it on top of the tree first, so he can maneuver a little more easily. The log goes up to roughly both their chests. ] I can spot you, or we can try to find a way around. [ Tony's willing to try though and with an approving smile, Steve jumps lightly and pushes himself up with his arms. Once he's got one leg swung around on each side of the trunk, he reaches a hand down for Tony's so he can help pull him up. ]

I don’t know if I can take a whole lot of credit for this choice, I just lucked out.
[ God knows he hadn’t done a single thing to research other than finding a remote location, a livable place, and somewhere where he could disappear. Now that the world is back to normal, sometimes Tony finds himself wanting to go back to the city, but at the same time he has found himself loving his surroundings too much to leave just yet. That may change later, but for now he’s just enjoying the openness and the privacy he gets here in the middle of nowhere.
Steve’s question if he’s up for trying to climb over the tree, he nods even if in the pit of his stomach he can’t help but be a little nervous. Not because he doesn’t think Steve would be able to catch him, but it’s nervousness at his own ability. Part of his therapy sessions involve strengthening his left arm as he compensates for the arm that’s wasted, but this is the first time he has a ‘challenge’ this big.
Still, he trusts Steve. And he knows he’s strong enough to give him proper support, so that definitely helps.
Reaching for Steve’s hand, he grips it tightly so that he can help pull him up. Tony does what he can to help with the process, even if it’s not a whole lot, and once he’s on the log he breathes out a small chuckle. ]
Have I mentioned yet how glad I am you have that serum to help you? I think I’d be feeling kind of self conscious for you having to help me otherwise.
[ He gives him a small but sincere smile. ] Thanks.
Well— [ He takes one more look over the entire lake. ] It sure looks like the kinda place you'd live, if you liked camping. [ He smiles by the end of it, at Tony, before moving forward.
When it comes to spotting Tony, Steve is ready to do the bulk of the work. Plus, he's already up top, so a lot of muscles Tony needs to use are in his core, not his arm. As long as he's been treating himself okay, Steve doesn't anticipate it not working out. Then, he feels the strength of Tony's grip — it's not bad by any means — and within a few seconds, Tony's sitting on top of the log with him.
Tony chuckles then and Steve just grins at him. What can he say? He's proud. And he ... feels a growing fondness towards Tony throughout it all. ]
No, you haven't. [ He's teasing, especially as he starts to exaggerate himself thinking. ] Come to think of it. I think the last time you ever said anything about the serum ... was ... fifteen years ago? Something about bottles and being special?
[ Steve swings his other leg around then so he can hop off on the other side of the tree trunk, before extending his hand up toward Tony this time. ]
Well, then good thing I live here so we can do this more often if I survive this trip.
[ He says it with a smirk and a wink. He has been having fun so far, so he doubts he won’t want to do this again. Of course, he’s reserving complete judgment until it’s over, but as of right now it has been a good trip so far.
Steve’s strength and the way he helps him is impressive, it’s so seamless that it’s impressive, and ... well. His brain is going to places it probably shouldn’t be, and he tries to ignore it as much as he can.
Instead, he finds himself grinning back until Steve mentions that comment and Tony makes a face. ]
Oh. Right. That’s...not one of my brightest moments.
[ Oh how wrong had they both been that day. It had been the scepter, and it’s why Tony has never held it against Steve, but still. He now hates that he ever said that to Steve, even if it was in the heat of the moment and at the time he felt like he was right.
Taking his hand, Tony makes his way down and gives his hand a squeeze with a thank you before letting go. When Steve moves to grab the backpack, Tony takes the opportunity to carefully adjust the sling. Between the movement and the jump, and now the readjustment, his breath hitches a little with the process but he’s good to maintain his expression as neutral as possible. ]
Where else have you camped, that you really liked? Anywhere fun or interesting?
[ The wink makes Steve extremely self-conscious for a moment. It's a feeling he hasn't felt for a very long time, and he doesn't fully understand it, so Steve just shakes it off. ]
Wasn't one of my brightest moments either. Turns out, when you take off that suit, you're an even better man than you are with it on.
[ Steve slips that compliment in so naturally like it's no big deal. He remembers what he said that day too, and he knows now better than anyone how wrong he was. He's still embarrassed, honestly, that back then he'd asked Tony to 'go a few rounds' outside like they were boys fighting in the yard.
This time though, when Steve turns around after putting on his pack again, he catches sight of something on Tony's face. Just an ounce of pain. But he can tell Tony's pretending it didn't happen, so Steve files that piece of information away for now. He'll pay some extra attention to it later when they're making a campfire and settling in for the night. ]
Recently? Upstate. Turns out there a lot of great campsites if you drive up just an hour or two from where I ended up. I've always wanted to go to Arizona. The Grand Canyon. But I haven't had much of a chance to get around.
[ He shrugs. ] I guess we had pretty demanding jobs.
[ Steve is so good at slipping in that compliment that it takes Tony by surprise, and he can feel his cheeks actually redden a little. Tony Stark is a lot of things, but bashful isn’t one of them, yet here he is. With a look on his face that would say otherwise. ]
That’s... [ Yeah. He has no idea what to say for a moment. ] We were fools back then, weren’t we. I guess you were just too good to be true, Steve Rogers. I couldn’t wrap my head around it then.
[ Then. Back when he was stupid and said something that was so wrong that he feels stupid about it now. Especially now. ]
The Grand Canyon would be fun. [ He smiles slightly. ] I can see how work got in the way. But hey, good thing we’re retired now, I guess.
[ It’s a really good thing. Because chances like these didn’t happen a whole hell of a lot back then, and now here they are. Going camping, talking like old friends.
As they continue their hike, they talk about different spots to visit. Tony tells him of the different countries he’s already thinking of taking him - Italy, first of all, then the UK, Spain, Portugal. He’s so distracted by his plans that for a moment he misses a spot where a root is coming out from the ground, and he finds himself losing his balance. This isn’t the first time Tony has encountered this loss of balance thing with only one arm - he did it many times even after being discharged, whenever he’d get too tired or the therapy sessions left him wiped out, but this is the first time it happens without a nearby wall to use as support.
Before he can get too far down, though, Steve is suddenly there. His grip is solid (much better than any wall, some part of his brain can’t help but think), and Tony can’t help but blink in surprise. Especially because he had fully been expecting to be face down in the dirt right about now. ]
[ In all their years of knowing each other, Steve has never seen Tony Stark blush. So when, after his comment about Tony being a good man, Steve sees a tint of red in Tony's cheeks, he thinks it must be the heat, or how much Tony's body is moving because of the hike. He can't even fathom the idea that Tony's... is he... no no, there's no way that Tony's blushing.
But then, Tony slips in that he thought Steve was too good to be true. Normally, a compliment like that would stop Steve in his tracks, but this time, the compliment is so impossible in Steve's mind, that he actually protests. ]
Clearly, I hadn't been good enough. Not if I couldn't tell good teammates from bad ones. [ He says it half apologetically, half lightly, just so Tony doesn't think this is something that's been bothering him for years. But he does mean it. Steve doesn't think he was anywhere near perfect — now or then.
He grins again though when Tony says the Grand Canyon would be fun because it almost sounds like he's interested in going together, even if Steve knows that can't be what he means. Plus, after that Tony starts telling him about plans for their Europe trip and god does it make Steve smile just thinking and talking about it.
Is the pasta in Italy really that good? Could we visit this little spot in the U.K. where I stayed briefly during the war? The questions keep pouring out of him and Steve's heart is fully in it.
Until he hears the sound of Tony's boot getting caught in a root. He's a split second later than he wanted to be — it's why Tony's closer to the ground, even if he isn't touching it — but Steve really moves. But because Tony's other arm isn't being used and Steve needed to act quickly, he does more than grab Tony's free hand for stability.
When he swoops, it's from the side, and Steve practically grabs Tony's entire chest, looping his arm around Tony's torso and his grip tightens around Tony's side. ]
I've got you. [ He says when they're both frozen in place, staring at each other from extremely close quarters, waiting to make sure no more unexpected movement takes place. Steve, however, finds himself noticing so many things about Tony he hadn't known before — like how even after all this movement, Tony's body only feels lukewarm, compared to hot. By comparison, Steve's own body might as well be an electric blanket. ]
I- uh ... No ... problem. [ He clears his throat for a moment, before purposefully willing himself to help bring Tony into full control of his own balance, and letting go. ] One of the ... uh, benefits ... of having me around. [ He's pretty sure that whatever words he just said didn't completely reflect what he meant, but Steve's oddly nervous, and he's pretty much forgotten what he just said already. ]
[ Tony gives him a small smile and a pat on his shoulder. They both obviously regret that interaction, how stupidly wrong they had both been. It’s good to know that it’s no longer a wedge between them.
For the record, though, Tony always thought Steve was that good. Still is, really. He’s better than he could have ever given him credit for before.
It’s what makes this trip planning part with him so much fun already. They’re already on one adventure, and now they get to plan more. It’s nice, to not have the weight of the world on their shoulders and get a chance to do this. To live again.
When Steve swoops in to save him - because really, that’s exactly what he does - for a moment Tony doesn’t even move. He’s suddenly very much aware of the way Steve has a hold of him, how warm he is. How his eyes are an impossible shade of blue, and he can finally see those green specks in them that Zeno had mentioned in Siberia.
And, Tony realizes, his hand is on Steve’s shoulder. He had been ready to break his fall as much as he could with his good arm but, when Steve had swooped in, he had held on to him unconsciously instead. In the back of his head - the part that still struggles with looking at himself in the mirror for too long on some days - he knows that in this close proximity, Steve will be able to see the traces of where the blast from the stones had more or less charred the side of his face. Depending on the angle, Steve might see that they’re a bit more visible along his ear, how they run down his neck, disappearing under his shirt. Helen had managed to make them as faint as she could, but the force and the damage had been too strong to erase them all.
It’s that realization that makes him glad when they begin to move again so that they can stand. Still, though, even with that thought in mind, he can’t bring himself to move back too much. He can still feel how warm Steve had been, like a lingering sensation that he can’t quite shake, and Tony just...doesn’t move just yet. ]
Yeah. It’s a great benefit. Thank you.
[ Steve isn’t the only one that’s nervous. Tony feels a little rattled and, while part of it is due to how close he came to falling, it’s starting to dawn on him that it’s for another reason altogether. But...
No, he tells himself, he’s imagining things. ]
Do you mind if we stop for a second? I need to...
[ He motions to the sling, an apologetic look on his face, before setting his backpack down so he can readjust it again. Although he hadn’t been able to do anything, instinct had made him try to use it. Now that he’s not so distracted, he can feel the way the pain flares as he situates it back now it should be and the muscles in his jaw obviously tense as he tries to ignore it. ]
[ Steve does see the scars, but his eyes don't really linger there. He was there for the fight. He hadn't seen Tony snap, but he saw the aftermath and the extreme toll they took on Tony's body. To Steve, those scars are reflections of Tony's bravery and selflessness, and while they're worth looking at, Steve already expects them to be there.
Instead, what really captures his attention, is how big Tony's brown eyes are, and while he can't understand yet every layer inside them, he almost gets lost in how deep they are, and how intimately close he suddenly feels to Tony as he looks into them. ]
Yeah, of course- Of course. [ He's grateful for the interruption because it causes him to look away and Steve notices that his heart is beating faster than normal.
So when Tony indicates that he needs to adjust the sling, maybe it's for both their benefits that Steve takes off his own packs and kneels down next to it, looking for something. Given the clues he's gotten so far, he doesn't think Tony wants him to see this, and well, Steve needs a minute himself to figure out what's going on in his chest.
In the end, though, all he pulls out is a water bottle — it's made out of metal so it's insulated from the weather and still has full-size ice cubes floating around inside. Steve packs stuff like this so he doesn't overheat, given how prone he is to that in the first place. After flipping up the top, he offers it to Tony. ]
Water? Might feel nice.
[ When Steve makes eye contact with Tony again though, he feels his heart starting to pound again, and this time, he just tries to swallow that nervous sensation down. There are more important things to try and figure out right now. ]
Your arm still bothers you a lot. [ He says, even if it's asked like a question. ] Anything I can do to help?
[ Somewhere in the back of his head he can hear the sound of the ice cubes in the water bottle, he even hears Steve’s words but when he answers he sounds almost distracted. And he is, as he fumbles a little with the damn thing, but his focus is more on trying to tolerate the wave of pain that follows. ]
I’m, uh. No, thank you.
[ He turns to him after a moment, and he’s ready to say that they can keep moving, but then Steve talks and for a moment he doesn’t know what to say. He could lie, sure. But this probably won’t be the last time this will happen, so it’s not like he can actually lie. ]
Thanks, but unfortunately no. There’s not a whole lot that can be done.
[ He busies himself by reaching for his backpack before he gives a small smile as if to say, it’s fine. It’s okay. ]
...the damage is just. Very deep. They’ve tried to fix it, but it’s not going that great. Now I’m just waiting to see how much can be salvaged before we do...other solutions.
In the meantime, it just hurts. For the most part it’s tolerable if I don’t move it - hence the sling - but some things still just aggravate it. It can be movement, or...well, me trying to apparently use it to catch myself, even in the sling. Even if I can’t. I still forget, I guess.
[ It’s more honesty than he expected to come out, but...there it is. If they’re going to be camping and travel partners, though, maybe it’s good for Steve to know what he’s dealing with. ]
[ Steve nods. Despite the serum, he's dealt with injuries all his life — first, as a kid who suffered through nearly every disease, and second, as a soldier who saw every day the terrors of war.
As Tony continues to explain what's going on, Steve just keeps nodding when appropriate. He recognizes that this isn't something he should give pointers with. That no matter if it's painkillers or ice — a million people have probably told Tony to try this or that solution, and Steve guesses that Tony's tried them all.
The only other thing Steve can possibly think of, that he might try talking to Helen about when they get back, is a blood transfusion. But that's beyond his level of expertise. Helen'll know whether that's even an option and if it would even help. ]
It hasn't been that long. Makes sense that your body still forgets. [ A beat. ] For what it's worth. You're doing a pretty good job of pretending like it doesn't hurt. Had me fooled until we actually came out here, and I've been seeing you every other day for a couple of weeks.
Yeah, it’s been an adjustment. But, I mean, things were rough for a while. Ending up with just one arm out of commission for good - that’s not that bad, compared to how it could have gone. So I’m trying to make the best of it, I guess. And I’m already working on a solution for when we get to that point where we can move on to the next step. In the meantime, I can deal with the pain on most days. My tolerance level apparently went up with all this. It’s just the random moments when it flares up that I can’t quite ignore it, or I’m having a rough day.
[ At his thanks, Tony’s smile grows a bit more. ]
Thank you for not making this awkward. Sorry I didn’t tell you sooner, I’m just still...adjusting to it all, I guess.
But, if we’re going to spend more time together then it’s only fair if you know what’s going on. So...if there’s anything you want to know about it, I’ll tell you.
[ Steve smiles. ] No, it's not bad at all. [ On the battlefield, he remembers turning to Tony when he realized they won, and he remembers feeling a sudden drop in the pit of his stomach when he saw how they'd won.
Ultimately, he's just grateful that Tony's alive at all. That with the help of Strange and Wong they were able to move him directly to where he could get help. ]
Hey — it's your right to tell me or not. [ No apologies needed. ]
There is something I want to know. [ Steve rests his hands on his hips and studies Tony's sling for a moment. ] Does it hurt only when you try to move or use it? [ After a second, Steve realizes that maybe he's not being clear. ] Just- only hypothetically. If say, someone were to pick you up, would that hurt?
[ There's just a tint of pink on his cheeks near the end, because he's aware of how that question could be interpreted. But for the most part, Steve is wondering if the pain stems from the use of a muscle that Tony has control over, versus any jostling that might happen to his arm. He's asking, because it's possible they'll run into some obstacles where actually, it is easier for Steve to carry Tony instead of helping him to do it himself, and he certainly wouldn't mind doing it. ]
[ It’s surprising to Tony, how easy this is. Talking with Steve. Being honest about all this. He had been concerned, partly because he was afraid his bubble of normalcy that he felt with Steve would disappear if he talked or mentioned his recovery, but...nothing has changed. Except for the fact that now Tony feels like he can be more honest about it, which helps. A lot. Oddly enough, it’s as if a weight has been lifted off his shoulders.
He considers Steve question as he looks down at his arm. He notices the pink tint in Steve’s face, but he tries to not let himself think too much about it. ]
It’s hard to tell. It’d depend on the angle, I guess. It always hurts when I try to move it, or if there’s prolonged pressure in some areas. But some other parts, mainly from my elbow down, are just. numb.
[ It feels like it’s gone, actually, but he doesn’t want to scare him or ruin this by putting it like that.
He turns back to him, a curious tilt of his head. ]
[ Steve smiles as he puts his hands up in a wide gesture. ]
Just hypothetically.
[ Steve knows the importance of feeling normal again, especially after an injury. He definitely doesn't want Tony to think that he's looking to literally carry him for the rest of the trip.
He's been able to tell too, ever since he took Tony out on his bike, that Pepper and Rhodey and whoever else Tony's seeing on a regular basis is treating him too much like a patient. Tony was just so excited by the idea — and Steve knows that feeling normal is half the battle when someone's in recovery. There's no way he's taking that away from Tony.
Unless of course, there are other reasons for him to carry him. But, what could those even be anyway.

The rest of the hike doesn't have many obstacles, except for a little tributary that runs out of the lake and cuts through the woods. The two of them need to make their way over carefully on some stones, but it all goes off with a hitch.
When the sun starts to set, they arrive at their destination — a nice spot right outside the woods and on the beach. Steve doesn't need Tony's help at all pitching the tent, just so they don't have to do it later, but he does let him help if he wants to. He'll show him how it all works too — though as he does, he's certain Tony's already designing a better, more automatic tent in his head already. Unzipping the tent flap, Steve throws the sleeping bags in there without unrolling them yet.
Next up is setting up the fire. The two of them collect rocks and wood, and Steve's somehow packed his own starter log that lights up immediately when he lights a match and throws it on top of the pile. Since it's Tony's first time, he thought it would be easier to learn this way. ]
Alright Tony. For dinner ... we have ... burgers? [ He asks, pulling out a package that looks like it used to be frozen but has thawed out from being in Steve's bag all day. ] Or hot dogs? [ Steve lifts up a second package with a couple of links inside. ]
[ By the time they make it to their camping spot, Tony’s leg muscles are kind of sore from the walk but he looks so relaxed and happy that it’s obvious this has been a success so far. He even does what he can to help Steve setting up camp where he can; he doesn’t know the first thing of what he’s doing, but Steve’s guidance helps with that. At first he had started helping to not just stand there awkwardly while the other man worked, but as they go along he actually does it because he’s curious and wants to learn.
And yes, he is definitely finding a way to make this easier. Maybe, he thinks, he can design a tent that builds itself with just the push of a button. That shouldn’t be too hard, right?
Once the fire is going, Tony sits down on a log and smiles at Steve’s question. He really had thought of everything. ]

You know - and I reserve the right to change my decision after sleeping on a sleeping bag - this is been a lot of fun. I can see why you like doing it.
[ Just imagine it: Stark Industries, announcing it's all-new camping line. At the thought, Steve smiles to himself. ]
Burgers it is.
[ And as Tony talks, Steve unhooks his skillet from the outside of his pack and removes the burgers' packaging. ]
It's rewarding, isn't it? [ He says, grinning as he sets the burgers onto the skillet and kneels down next to Tony so he can hold it over the fire to cook. ]
There's just something about being out here. In nature. It's like the rest of the world doesn't exist, and all we needed to get here was our own two feet.
[ Steve realizes that he forgot to get out the spatula, so he goes to retrieve it before coming back to kneel next to Tony again. ]
So— this? Most people like to bring a metal rack of some kind. You can put it right over the fire and then set the pan down. If you ever do this without me, that's what I'd recommend. I don't mind holding it, but I imagine most people would get tired of it after a while.
[ As the fire starts to heat up the skillet, the very bottoms of the burgers start to sizzle. It's going to be at least ten minutes before they're done though. ]
As for sleeping bags, I'm willing to bet you won't have any trouble. After a day's hike and how dark it gets after the sun sets, you'd be surprised at how easy it is to fall asleep out here.
[ He grins then, mostly because he's really excited to see how Tony experiences that part. One of the biggest reasons Steve loves to camp is because of how dark it gets. Unlike the city, which is lit up 24/7, the only light they'll have out here is the moon. ]
It is. [ He chuckles. ] I never thought I’d actually enjoy camping, but I think you’re changing my mind about all this.
[ Tony watches as he begins cooking the burgers, and nods slightly as he listens to him explain what to do if he ever goes camping alone. He already highly doubts that will ever happen, but at least now he knows something new in case he ever needs it.
But really, he’s not going camping without Steve.
As Steve talks about how easy it is to fall asleep out here, he raises an eyebrow skeptically but with a smile on his face that says ‘okay we’ll see.’ Five years ago, after arriving back from his stint in space, the idea of being surrounded by darkness would terrify him after staring into the void for 23 days, but that had been another thing that living in the cabin had helped him through. He has been living far away from the city for so long that he has gotten used to the stillness and the darkness and has come to appreciate it by this point.
Still, the idea of sleeping on the ground still doesn’t quite sound ideal. He has had worse sleeping conditions in the past, of course, but still. This is the first time he’s sleeping on the ground, outdoors.
He looks up towards the sky as it changes colors, the sun disappearing and the traces of the stars coming out to greet them. If Steve looks in Tony’s direction, he’ll see the serene look on his face as he takes it all for a moment before a small smile settles on his face as he turns to Steve. ]
Thanks for camping with me. This is... I’m really enjoying this.
Thanks for saying yes. [ And it's as easy as that, isn't it? As those last hours of daylight sneak away, promising to come back again tomorrow, they're left with the warm glow of their fire and the delicious smelling sizzle of their burgers. ] Honestly Tony. [ Steve turns to him again, now with half his face illuminated by the fire. ] I'm really enjoying our time together.
[ He's not trying to make a pass. He's just ... being honest. ]
And, I'm looking forward to spending more of it, together.
[ And yes, Steve did see the serenity on Tony's face earlier. It feels like a blessing, to have been able to create an environment where that could happen. He smiles too, then, and after a brief pause to just ... soak this all in, Steve starts poking around the skillet again and flips the burgers.
When they're both completely ready, he sets the skillet down on the sand to cool as he hunts around his bag for some paper plates. He's got buns too, and he sets those out to toast while the skillet's still hot. He's also got little packets of barbecue sauce, but not a whole lot else. Still, when it's time, Steve passes a plate to Tony, with all the components of a burger laid out in front of him. ]
Me, too. [ His smile seems to grow at the admittance. ] I’m glad we’re doing this.
[ Specifically that they are spending time together, actually. Tony had been looking forward to this trip, but it’s turning out so much better than he could have expected. Is it too early to plan next weekend?
As Steve moves around to get dinner ready, Tony can’t help but just watch him. His heart feels like it’s beating faster, and for a moment he forgets about how he had been watching the sun set, but...this is better, he decides. It surprises him to think that, but it’s getting harder to ignore the more he and Steve spend time together.
With a thanks, he takes his plate and uses one of the barbecue sauce packets to spread it on the patty before taking a bite. ]
Not bad, Chef Rogers. Hell, it actually tastes pretty great.

When Steve arrives, Tony’s ready to go with his sunglasses, new pants, and a thin long sleeve shirt that he already has the sleeve of his good arm rolled up. Slung over his shoulder is the backpack he’s using for a change of clothes, his meds, sunscreen and a flashlight, but it looks comically small compared to the one Steve is carrying.
And...god, it’s weird to be excited about camping, but he is. Deep down - very deep down - he knows that it’s more that he’s excited about hanging out with Steve than anything else, but he’s not ready to admit that, yet. So he focuses more on the trip. He does worry about the no technology piece, but he abides by their agreement and his phone has been left at home.
When Steve asks how his arm is doing, Tony shrugs slightly with his good shoulder and gives a quick ‘it’s fine’ before changing the subject. It’s still in the sling, secured against his body and hidden under the long sleeve of his shirt. The shirt is light enough that the lack of bulk from the bandages is visible, but thankfully it’s not light enough to show the actual damage. He knows that at some point Steve might get to see it, or see some of the after effects that Tony has so far done a good job hiding, but it is what it is. He has already resigned himself to that fact.
As they walk, Tony smirks over at him. ]
You know, if I start going through some sort withdrawals from not having FRIDAY or my phone on me, that’ll be on you. So I hope you’re ready for that.

Plus, they're only going to be gone for a day. While he can't make an absolute guarantee that everything will be fine, given that he'll be around to help, Steve sincerely doubts anything bad will happen. They're going camping in Tony's backyard, after all, even if it's a much bigger backyard than normal. ]

[ Steve smirks. It's a gorgeous day. They can hear birds in the distance, and their walk is punctuated by the crisp sound of their boots crunching leaves beneath their feet. ]

The day really is beautiful, and Tony hasn’t even thought of his phone, he’s just being a smartass. Steve’s response makes him laugh, though, and smirks over at him. ]

I don't think she'll find me very threatening. [ As they walk alongside each other, Steve scrunches up his nose a little as he thinks. ] I'm pretty sure the only part of her job I can do ... is talk to people.

[ The trail starts to curve up a little, following a dirt path in between a canopy of trees. As they continue on, the more and more they can see the lake on their left. ]
You really know how to pick a spot. [ To live in a place like this? It's pretty incredible.
After a small turn, however, the trail is blocked by a big tree that had fallen over long ago. By the looks of it, anyone else who has ever been here as mostly just climbed over it, but there might be a way around. ]
You up for trying this? [ Steve asks, as he takes off his backpack and sets it on top of the tree first, so he can maneuver a little more easily. The log goes up to roughly both their chests. ] I can spot you, or we can try to find a way around. [ Tony's willing to try though and with an approving smile, Steve jumps lightly and pushes himself up with his arms. Once he's got one leg swung around on each side of the trunk, he reaches a hand down for Tony's so he can help pull him up. ]

[ God knows he hadn’t done a single thing to research other than finding a remote location, a livable place, and somewhere where he could disappear. Now that the world is back to normal, sometimes Tony finds himself wanting to go back to the city, but at the same time he has found himself loving his surroundings too much to leave just yet. That may change later, but for now he’s just enjoying the openness and the privacy he gets here in the middle of nowhere.
Steve’s question if he’s up for trying to climb over the tree, he nods even if in the pit of his stomach he can’t help but be a little nervous. Not because he doesn’t think Steve would be able to catch him, but it’s nervousness at his own ability. Part of his therapy sessions involve strengthening his left arm as he compensates for the arm that’s wasted, but this is the first time he has a ‘challenge’ this big.
Still, he trusts Steve. And he knows he’s strong enough to give him proper support, so that definitely helps.
Reaching for Steve’s hand, he grips it tightly so that he can help pull him up. Tony does what he can to help with the process, even if it’s not a whole lot, and once he’s on the log he breathes out a small chuckle. ]
Have I mentioned yet how glad I am you have that serum to help you? I think I’d be feeling kind of self conscious for you having to help me otherwise.
[ He gives him a small but sincere smile. ] Thanks.

When it comes to spotting Tony, Steve is ready to do the bulk of the work. Plus, he's already up top, so a lot of muscles Tony needs to use are in his core, not his arm. As long as he's been treating himself okay, Steve doesn't anticipate it not working out. Then, he feels the strength of Tony's grip — it's not bad by any means — and within a few seconds, Tony's sitting on top of the log with him.
Tony chuckles then and Steve just grins at him. What can he say? He's proud. And he ... feels a growing fondness towards Tony throughout it all. ]
No, you haven't. [ He's teasing, especially as he starts to exaggerate himself thinking. ] Come to think of it. I think the last time you ever said anything about the serum ... was ... fifteen years ago? Something about bottles and being special?
[ Steve swings his other leg around then so he can hop off on the other side of the tree trunk, before extending his hand up toward Tony this time. ]

[ He says it with a smirk and a wink. He has been having fun so far, so he doubts he won’t want to do this again. Of course, he’s reserving complete judgment until it’s over, but as of right now it has been a good trip so far.
Steve’s strength and the way he helps him is impressive, it’s so seamless that it’s impressive, and ... well. His brain is going to places it probably shouldn’t be, and he tries to ignore it as much as he can.
Instead, he finds himself grinning back until Steve mentions that comment and Tony makes a face. ]
Oh. Right. That’s...not one of my brightest moments.
[ Oh how wrong had they both been that day. It had been the scepter, and it’s why Tony has never held it against Steve, but still. He now hates that he ever said that to Steve, even if it was in the heat of the moment and at the time he felt like he was right.
Taking his hand, Tony makes his way down and gives his hand a squeeze with a thank you before letting go. When Steve moves to grab the backpack, Tony takes the opportunity to carefully adjust the sling. Between the movement and the jump, and now the readjustment, his breath hitches a little with the process but he’s good to maintain his expression as neutral as possible. ]

Wasn't one of my brightest moments either. Turns out, when you take off that suit, you're an even better man than you are with it on.
[ Steve slips that compliment in so naturally like it's no big deal. He remembers what he said that day too, and he knows now better than anyone how wrong he was. He's still embarrassed, honestly, that back then he'd asked Tony to 'go a few rounds' outside like they were boys fighting in the yard.
This time though, when Steve turns around after putting on his pack again, he catches sight of something on Tony's face. Just an ounce of pain. But he can tell Tony's pretending it didn't happen, so Steve files that piece of information away for now. He'll pay some extra attention to it later when they're making a campfire and settling in for the night. ]
Recently? Upstate. Turns out there a lot of great campsites if you drive up just an hour or two from where I ended up. I've always wanted to go to Arizona. The Grand Canyon. But I haven't had much of a chance to get around.
[ He shrugs. ] I guess we had pretty demanding jobs.

That’s... [ Yeah. He has no idea what to say for a moment. ] We were fools back then, weren’t we. I guess you were just too good to be true, Steve Rogers. I couldn’t wrap my head around it then.
[ Then. Back when he was stupid and said something that was so wrong that he feels stupid about it now. Especially now. ]
The Grand Canyon would be fun. [ He smiles slightly. ] I can see how work got in the way. But hey, good thing we’re retired now, I guess.
[ It’s a really good thing. Because chances like these didn’t happen a whole hell of a lot back then, and now here they are. Going camping, talking like old friends.
As they continue their hike, they talk about different spots to visit. Tony tells him of the different countries he’s already thinking of taking him - Italy, first of all, then the UK, Spain, Portugal. He’s so distracted by his plans that for a moment he misses a spot where a root is coming out from the ground, and he finds himself losing his balance. This isn’t the first time Tony has encountered this loss of balance thing with only one arm - he did it many times even after being discharged, whenever he’d get too tired or the therapy sessions left him wiped out, but this is the first time it happens without a nearby wall to use as support.
Before he can get too far down, though, Steve is suddenly there. His grip is solid (much better than any wall, some part of his brain can’t help but think), and Tony can’t help but blink in surprise. Especially because he had fully been expecting to be face down in the dirt right about now. ]

But then, Tony slips in that he thought Steve was too good to be true. Normally, a compliment like that would stop Steve in his tracks, but this time, the compliment is so impossible in Steve's mind, that he actually protests. ]
Clearly, I hadn't been good enough. Not if I couldn't tell good teammates from bad ones. [ He says it half apologetically, half lightly, just so Tony doesn't think this is something that's been bothering him for years. But he does mean it. Steve doesn't think he was anywhere near perfect — now or then.
He grins again though when Tony says the Grand Canyon would be fun because it almost sounds like he's interested in going together, even if Steve knows that can't be what he means. Plus, after that Tony starts telling him about plans for their Europe trip and god does it make Steve smile just thinking and talking about it.
Is the pasta in Italy really that good? Could we visit this little spot in the U.K. where I stayed briefly during the war? The questions keep pouring out of him and Steve's heart is fully in it.
Until he hears the sound of Tony's boot getting caught in a root. He's a split second later than he wanted to be — it's why Tony's closer to the ground, even if he isn't touching it — but Steve really moves. But because Tony's other arm isn't being used and Steve needed to act quickly, he does more than grab Tony's free hand for stability.
When he swoops, it's from the side, and Steve practically grabs Tony's entire chest, looping his arm around Tony's torso and his grip tightens around Tony's side. ]
I've got you. [ He says when they're both frozen in place, staring at each other from extremely close quarters, waiting to make sure no more unexpected movement takes place. Steve, however, finds himself noticing so many things about Tony he hadn't known before — like how even after all this movement, Tony's body only feels lukewarm, compared to hot. By comparison, Steve's own body might as well be an electric blanket. ]
I- uh ... No ... problem. [ He clears his throat for a moment, before purposefully willing himself to help bring Tony into full control of his own balance, and letting go. ] One of the ... uh, benefits ... of having me around. [ He's pretty sure that whatever words he just said didn't completely reflect what he meant, but Steve's oddly nervous, and he's pretty much forgotten what he just said already. ]

For the record, though, Tony always thought Steve was that good. Still is, really. He’s better than he could have ever given him credit for before.
It’s what makes this trip planning part with him so much fun already. They’re already on one adventure, and now they get to plan more. It’s nice, to not have the weight of the world on their shoulders and get a chance to do this. To live again.
When Steve swoops in to save him - because really, that’s exactly what he does - for a moment Tony doesn’t even move. He’s suddenly very much aware of the way Steve has a hold of him, how warm he is. How his eyes are an impossible shade of blue, and he can finally see those green specks in them that Zeno had mentioned in Siberia.
And, Tony realizes, his hand is on Steve’s shoulder. He had been ready to break his fall as much as he could with his good arm but, when Steve had swooped in, he had held on to him unconsciously instead. In the back of his head - the part that still struggles with looking at himself in the mirror for too long on some days - he knows that in this close proximity, Steve will be able to see the traces of where the blast from the stones had more or less charred the side of his face. Depending on the angle, Steve might see that they’re a bit more visible along his ear, how they run down his neck, disappearing under his shirt. Helen had managed to make them as faint as she could, but the force and the damage had been too strong to erase them all.
It’s that realization that makes him glad when they begin to move again so that they can stand. Still, though, even with that thought in mind, he can’t bring himself to move back too much. He can still feel how warm Steve had been, like a lingering sensation that he can’t quite shake, and Tony just...doesn’t move just yet. ]
Yeah. It’s a great benefit. Thank you.
[ Steve isn’t the only one that’s nervous. Tony feels a little rattled and, while part of it is due to how close he came to falling, it’s starting to dawn on him that it’s for another reason altogether. But...
No, he tells himself, he’s imagining things. ]
Do you mind if we stop for a second? I need to...
[ He motions to the sling, an apologetic look on his face, before setting his backpack down so he can readjust it again. Although he hadn’t been able to do anything, instinct had made him try to use it. Now that he’s not so distracted, he can feel the way the pain flares as he situates it back now it should be and the muscles in his jaw obviously tense as he tries to ignore it. ]
Sorry. We can... I just need a minute.

Instead, what really captures his attention, is how big Tony's brown eyes are, and while he can't understand yet every layer inside them, he almost gets lost in how deep they are, and how intimately close he suddenly feels to Tony as he looks into them. ]
Yeah, of course- Of course. [ He's grateful for the interruption because it causes him to look away and Steve notices that his heart is beating faster than normal.
So when Tony indicates that he needs to adjust the sling, maybe it's for both their benefits that Steve takes off his own packs and kneels down next to it, looking for something. Given the clues he's gotten so far, he doesn't think Tony wants him to see this, and well, Steve needs a minute himself to figure out what's going on in his chest.
In the end, though, all he pulls out is a water bottle — it's made out of metal so it's insulated from the weather and still has full-size ice cubes floating around inside. Steve packs stuff like this so he doesn't overheat, given how prone he is to that in the first place. After flipping up the top, he offers it to Tony. ]
Water? Might feel nice.
[ When Steve makes eye contact with Tony again though, he feels his heart starting to pound again, and this time, he just tries to swallow that nervous sensation down. There are more important things to try and figure out right now. ]
Your arm still bothers you a lot. [ He says, even if it's asked like a question. ] Anything I can do to help?

[ He turns to him after a moment, and he’s ready to say that they can keep moving, but then Steve talks and for a moment he doesn’t know what to say. He could lie, sure. But this probably won’t be the last time this will happen, so it’s not like he can actually lie. ]

[ He busies himself by reaching for his backpack before he gives a small smile as if to say, it’s fine. It’s okay. ]
...the damage is just. Very deep. They’ve tried to fix it, but it’s not going that great. Now I’m just waiting to see how much can be salvaged before we do...other solutions.
In the meantime, it just hurts. For the most part it’s tolerable if I don’t move it - hence the sling - but some things still just aggravate it. It can be movement, or...well, me trying to apparently use it to catch myself, even in the sling. Even if I can’t. I still forget, I guess.
[ It’s more honesty than he expected to come out, but...there it is. If they’re going to be camping and travel partners, though, maybe it’s good for Steve to know what he’s dealing with. ]

As Tony continues to explain what's going on, Steve just keeps nodding when appropriate. He recognizes that this isn't something he should give pointers with. That no matter if it's painkillers or ice — a million people have probably told Tony to try this or that solution, and Steve guesses that Tony's tried them all.
The only other thing Steve can possibly think of, that he might try talking to Helen about when they get back, is a blood transfusion. But that's beyond his level of expertise. Helen'll know whether that's even an option and if it would even help. ]
It hasn't been that long. Makes sense that your body still forgets. [ A beat. ] For what it's worth. You're doing a pretty good job of pretending like it doesn't hurt. Had me fooled until we actually came out here, and I've been seeing you every other day for a couple of weeks.
[ He looks at Tony for a moment then. ]

Yeah, it’s been an adjustment. But, I mean, things were rough for a while. Ending up with just one arm out of commission for good - that’s not that bad, compared to how it could have gone. So I’m trying to make the best of it, I guess. And I’m already working on a solution for when we get to that point where we can move on to the next step. In the meantime, I can deal with the pain on most days. My tolerance level apparently went up with all this. It’s just the random moments when it flares up that I can’t quite ignore it, or I’m having a rough day.
[ At his thanks, Tony’s smile grows a bit more. ]

Ultimately, he's just grateful that Tony's alive at all. That with the help of Strange and Wong they were able to move him directly to where he could get help. ]

There is something I want to know. [ Steve rests his hands on his hips and studies Tony's sling for a moment. ] Does it hurt only when you try to move or use it? [ After a second, Steve realizes that maybe he's not being clear. ] Just- only hypothetically. If say, someone were to pick you up, would that hurt?
[ There's just a tint of pink on his cheeks near the end, because he's aware of how that question could be interpreted. But for the most part, Steve is wondering if the pain stems from the use of a muscle that Tony has control over, versus any jostling that might happen to his arm. He's asking, because it's possible they'll run into some obstacles where actually, it is easier for Steve to carry Tony instead of helping him to do it himself, and he certainly wouldn't mind doing it. ]

He considers Steve question as he looks down at his arm. He notices the pink tint in Steve’s face, but he tries to not let himself think too much about it. ]
It’s hard to tell. It’d depend on the angle, I guess. It always hurts when I try to move it, or if there’s prolonged pressure in some areas. But some other parts, mainly from my elbow down, are just. numb.
[ It feels like it’s gone, actually, but he doesn’t want to scare him or ruin this by putting it like that.
He turns back to him, a curious tilt of his head. ]

Just hypothetically.
[ Steve knows the importance of feeling normal again, especially after an injury. He definitely doesn't want Tony to think that he's looking to literally carry him for the rest of the trip.
He's been able to tell too, ever since he took Tony out on his bike, that Pepper and Rhodey and whoever else Tony's seeing on a regular basis is treating him too much like a patient. Tony was just so excited by the idea — and Steve knows that feeling normal is half the battle when someone's in recovery. There's no way he's taking that away from Tony.
Unless of course, there are other reasons for him to carry him. But, what could those even be anyway.

The rest of the hike doesn't have many obstacles, except for a little tributary that runs out of the lake and cuts through the woods. The two of them need to make their way over carefully on some stones, but it all goes off with a hitch.
When the sun starts to set, they arrive at their destination — a nice spot right outside the woods and on the beach. Steve doesn't need Tony's help at all pitching the tent, just so they don't have to do it later, but he does let him help if he wants to. He'll show him how it all works too — though as he does, he's certain Tony's already designing a better, more automatic tent in his head already. Unzipping the tent flap, Steve throws the sleeping bags in there without unrolling them yet.
Next up is setting up the fire. The two of them collect rocks and wood, and Steve's somehow packed his own starter log that lights up immediately when he lights a match and throws it on top of the pile. Since it's Tony's first time, he thought it would be easier to learn this way. ]
Alright Tony. For dinner ... we have ... burgers? [ He asks, pulling out a package that looks like it used to be frozen but has thawed out from being in Steve's bag all day. ] Or hot dogs? [ Steve lifts up a second package with a couple of links inside. ]

And yes, he is definitely finding a way to make this easier. Maybe, he thinks, he can design a tent that builds itself with just the push of a button. That shouldn’t be too hard, right?
Once the fire is going, Tony sits down on a log and smiles at Steve’s question. He really had thought of everything. ]

As Steve talks about how easy it is to fall asleep out here, he raises an eyebrow skeptically but with a smile on his face that says ‘okay we’ll see.’ Five years ago, after arriving back from his stint in space, the idea of being surrounded by darkness would terrify him after staring into the void for 23 days, but that had been another thing that living in the cabin had helped him through. He has been living far away from the city for so long that he has gotten used to the stillness and the darkness and has come to appreciate it by this point.
Still, the idea of sleeping on the ground still doesn’t quite sound ideal. He has had worse sleeping conditions in the past, of course, but still. This is the first time he’s sleeping on the ground, outdoors.
He looks up towards the sky as it changes colors, the sun disappearing and the traces of the stars coming out to greet them. If Steve looks in Tony’s direction, he’ll see the serene look on his face as he takes it all for a moment before a small smile settles on his face as he turns to Steve. ]
Thanks for camping with me. This is... I’m really enjoying this.

[ And yes, Steve did see the serenity on Tony's face earlier. It feels like a blessing, to have been able to create an environment where that could happen. He smiles too, then, and after a brief pause to just ... soak this all in, Steve starts poking around the skillet again and flips the burgers.
When they're both completely ready, he sets the skillet down on the sand to cool as he hunts around his bag for some paper plates. He's got buns too, and he sets those out to toast while the skillet's still hot. He's also got little packets of barbecue sauce, but not a whole lot else. Still, when it's time, Steve passes a plate to Tony, with all the components of a burger laid out in front of him. ]

[ Specifically that they are spending time together, actually. Tony had been looking forward to this trip, but it’s turning out so much better than he could have expected. Is it too early to plan next weekend?
As Steve moves around to get dinner ready, Tony can’t help but just watch him. His heart feels like it’s beating faster, and for a moment he forgets about how he had been watching the sun set, but...this is better, he decides. It surprises him to think that, but it’s getting harder to ignore the more he and Steve spend time together.
With a thanks, he takes his plate and uses one of the barbecue sauce packets to spread it on the patty before taking a bite. ]
Not bad, Chef Rogers. Hell, it actually tastes pretty great.
